According to Tony Robbins, there are 6 different needs that humans have.
All humans have these same needs, but each different person has a different balance of the 6 needs. What might be a minor need for you might be a major need for a certain team member you have.
When you understand the needs that most drive you, and the needs that most drive the people on your team, you can design your business to fulfil those needs.
In this video, filmed at the Platinum Mastermind in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, Rene Kamstra talks about understanding human needs within your business.
STABILITY AND VARIETY
The first of the six human needs is stability. This is the need for a stable income, a stable routine and a sense of certainty in life.
Most of us have a need for certainty and stability in some parts of our life, particularly the financial aspects. However, some people have a greater need for stability than others, in all facets of their life. They like to know exactly what they’re going to eat every day for the next 30 days.
Rene Kamstra is not one of those people. She loves variety. She loves to travel and she has set up all her businesses in a way that she does not have to run them. She speaks to her team and they run her businesses, while she is able to travel.
All of us have a need for both stability and variety, but most of us lean more to one than the other. Recognize which one you have a greater need for and design your business to fulfil that need.
RECOGNITION AND CONNECTION
Some people need accolades and recognition. They like to be in the spotlight and to be noticed and celebrated. If this is you, don’t set up your business so that you’re working behind the scenes. Let your business fulfil that need and make yourself the face of your business.
There will also be people on your team who need recognition. They don’t want their hard work to go unnoticed. Show them your appreciation.
Other people need connection. They want to feel part of a team and they want to feel loved and to have someone else to love. They don’t like being alone. Place these people in roles where they can interact with customers and colleagues, not in roles that require them to work alone.
GROWTH AND GIVING
Some people have a need for growth. They like to know that they’re improving their skills and growing as a person. If they feel like their role doesn’t allow them to grow, they’ll be unhappy.
Other people have a need for giving. They want to give to charity or even start their own. They like to know they’re helping others and giving back. Is this what drives you? If so, design your business to work towards that goal.
HOW THIS HELPS YOUR BUSINESS
Each person on your team, including yourself, has a different combination of the 6 different needs.
First of all, know yourself. Take some time to think about what drives you, and ask yourself whether your business is set up in a way that supports that.
Then, work out how you can fulfil those needs for the people on your team as well. Remember that a happy team leads to happy clients.
If you go to a hotel and the receptionist is grumpy, you don’t want to go there anymore. You don’t want your clients to have that kind of experience, so invest in your team and make sure you’re addressing their needs.
