YouTube is the number 2 search engine on the internet. Doesn’t it make sense for your business to have a presence in those search results?
The main components of a YouTube search result are the thumbnail, the headline and the view count.
All three of these components (even the view count) are within your control. You can use them to influence viewers to click on your video, watch your video and move closer towards buying.
In this video, I share some tactics to get more clicks and views on your YouTube videos.
YouTube automatically generates a thumbnail for your video. It takes a random frame out of the video and that becomes the thumbnail.
The automatically generated thumbnail can be hit or miss. Sometimes it can be effective as it is. If it’s a clear and well-lit shot of your face, it will stand out in the search results. Faces are proven to get more clicks.
Often, you will want to change the automatic thumbnail to an image that you provide yourself. However, make sure it’s a compelling picture. A picture of a laptop or a similar inanimate object will not stand out, and may well get you fewer clicks than a frame from your video.
On the MOBE YouTube channel, we use video thumbnails that include bright colors, faces and text. All of these elements contribute towards an eye-catching thumbnail. Take a look at our YouTube channel over here.
While the thumbnail catches people’s eye, the headline is what determines whether they’ll click.
It’s worth taking the time to learn how to write good headlines. A good free resource is “100 Greatest Headlines Ever Written,” by Jay Abraham. Pay attention to the principles discussed below each headline, and see how you can use them in your own headlines.
For example, “how to” can be very powerful words when followed by a benefit. As discussed in Jay Abraham’s report, “Win Friends and Influence People” is a trite mantra, but “How to Win Friends and Influence People” implies there is a secret method being revealed. People are eager to learn the secret.
Another example from Jay Abraham’s report is “They Laughed When I Sat Down at the Piano, But Not When I Started to Play.” This headline appeals to most people’s sympathy for the underdog.
THE VIEW COUNT
People will also look at the view count in their moment of decision about whether to watch your video. If they see that your video has 2 or 3 views, clicking onto your video automatically becomes less appealing.
If you have a list, you don’t need to experience this problem. Any time you publish a video, send an email to your list. People will watch it and your view count will increase. Alternatively, you can run your video as a paid ad on YouTube and this will similarly increase its view count.
A high view count not only adds social proof, but it is also factored into YouTube’s algorithm. Videos with higher view counts appear more frequently in search results and suggested videos.
That means more video views for you and more chances to put your offer in front of your target audience.
