Before he started his own carpet cleaning business, T.J. Rohleder worked in various sales jobs. He learned how to sell under his first sales manager, Ron, whose store T.J. worked in.
T.J. then went from sales job to sales job. He performed OK, but never outstandingly well.
When he started his own carpet cleaning business, his struggle with sales suddenly changed. Selling became easy, effortless and even fun.
Why? Because when T.J. was working in Ron’s store or in other sales jobs, he was trying extra hard to convince people about products he didn’t believe in or was not passionate about himself.
In his carpet cleaning business, T.J. believed in his product. He was genuinely passionate about carpet cleaning and it showed when he spoke to clients. He didn’t need to try extra hard. His belief and passion did the selling for him.
THE TRUTH ABOUT SALES
Most people who are afraid to sell are under the impression that sales is about tricking people into buying things they don’t want and don’t need. Undoubtedly, there are some sales people who do operate like this, and those few give the whole sales profession a bad name.
However, you wouldn’t have gone into the business you went into if you didn’t believe in your product. When you speak to customers, let that belief show and transfer onto the customer.
You’ll find it’s a more fun, more noble and more effective way to sell than any trickery tactic.
