Most of us can trace back our entrepreneurial journey to a time when we had been living a “normal” life like the majority of society, and decided to veer off a different path.
Most of us also had to face the reality that entrepreneurship is harder than we originally thought.
If that challenge wasn’t enough, many of us then had to deal with the additional pressure of our family not supporting what we’re doing.
LIKE A CRAB CRAWLING OUT OF A BUCKET
When you’ve just started a new business venture and you’re not seeing the results you expected, you might know that you just need to give it more time.
Your family doesn’t always see it the same way. They worry that you might not be cut out for this, that you’re biting off more than you can chew. They don’t want to see you hit rock bottom, so they try to protect you. It’s exactly the same as when a crab tries to crawl out of a bucket and the other crabs pull it back down again.
Tom Beal can relate. When he started his business, his wife would ask him why he couldn’t just get a job at a factory.
It’s hard when you’re trying to provide for your family, but you’re failing to do it, and they’re belittling you for it. It’s especially harder when you’re trying to escape from a toxic job in the corporate world, and you’re getting beat up both at work and at home, like Tom Beal was.
WHAT KEEPS YOU GOING?
The thing that kept Tom going when his family would not support him was remembering why he’s doing it. He saw people being able to travel with their families instead of being tied to a job, and he wanted to do that with his family.
Remember that your family only wants you to quit because they doubt whether you have the resolve to make your business work. If you stay committed and focused, they will often gain some confidence in you and change their minds.
Finally, Tom Beal’s grandmother believed in him and loaned him $20,000. This allowed him to invest in events, where he was able to build relationships that fueled the start of his business. It was the turning point he was waiting for.
Your family will start believing in you when you start believing in yourself.
