It was 2012. I was sitting at my San Diego hotel room desk, doing some last minute planning for MOBE’s second ever live event.
I check Facebook and see I’ve been invited to another event here in San Diego. It’s called Think Tank and it’s a $4,000 mastermind being held in a tent on the beach. It’s an invite-only event and only elite entrepreneurs are invited.
Although I didn’t know anyone else who was going, I decided to go along.
At 9:00 the following morning, I arrive outside the tent on the beach and I recognize John Chow, a famous blogger. He’d never met me before, but I’d seen his face online. We had a good conversation and exchanged contact details.
A few weeks later, I’m running an affiliate contest for my ebook, I.M. Revolution, and there are 5 days left. The affiliate currently in first place has only sold about 42 ebooks, so we’re off to a slow start.

TIPS FOR PROFITABLE NETWORKING
What can you learn from this story?
First of all, don’t be afraid to spend money on networking. If you knew a new connection could make you $6 million, would you be willing to spend $4,000 to make that connection? Of course.
Secondly, focus on quality rather than quantity. I didn’t go to a speed networking event and swap business cards with 400 different people. I went to an exclusive mastermind for the most elite of entrepreneurs, and spoke with just one famous blogger.
Thirdly, don’t have an agenda. I could have invited John to become an affiliate on our first meeting, but I skipped the “pitch”, got to know him as a person and formed the relationship first. Then, when there was an opportunity I thought he might be interested in, I reached out an offered him an opportunity to win some prize money.
