So I’ve had this idea bouncing around my head for about a year now, and I think it’s time to share it with everyone. I’ve had such a great time putting MOBE together and helping our consultants become successful that I’ve decided it is time to give back to the international community. Specifically, I want to put together a program for hopeful teenage entrepreneurs that could use a leg-up in the business world. Right now, I imagine the finished product to be a training program for young people to learn about running and working in a successful business.
I hope to get the program into production somewhere in the next twelve months. Obviously the details aren’t there yet, but I can share some of my hopes for the future.
Youth Programs Based on Creativity
When I was a kid growing up in Western Australia, my parents always encouraged me to follow my entrepreneurial desires. There were all kinds of schemes I had, but the first real venture I remember starting was a potato business on the side of the road. My family already grew potatoes, so this was kind of a logical step in my entrepreneurial career. The first time someone stopped their car and actually bought a bag of potatoes, I was so amazed and pleased with myself!
I don’t know what kind of ideas for making money kids have these days, but I’m pretty excited to find out. Whether it’s potato sales or something that’s really technical and out of my current scope of understanding, I want to give ambitious kids the chance to complete an internship with my team and me.
Though I’m not quite sure how the vetting process will go, I think I will ask any interested teens to submit their business ideas as an application. The kids that I select will have the chance to learn things I didn’t know until I was in my twenties, which will hopefully put them on the path to greater things in just a couple of years.
Defining Future Career Goals
Almost 99 percent of young people have a job at some point between the ages of 18 and 25. Forty-four percent of those jobs are in the leisure and hospitality industries-that includes jobs like cleaning hotel rooms, cooking in fast-food restaurants, and operating customer service telephone lines. Unfortunately, most teenagers aren’t really looking to have a future career in those industries, if they actually have any idea of their future career at all.
For kids that want to develop their business skills early, an internship is a great way to get ahead in the game. Even for kids that aren’t sure what they want to do after high school or university, an internship with MOBE could help them find direction and develop their ideas. No matter what direction a young person takes in life, it’s always helpful to know how the business world works. Marketing is a part of every industry, and not everyone knows that.
Shaping the Future of MOBE
I hope it isn’t too much to expect that some of the young people I take on, as interns will become interested in working with MOBE and me in the future. I’m always excited about new ideas and new ways of creating success, and I think today’s teens have a lot to offer MOBE in the coming years. As technology changes and marketing strategies adapt to those changes, it’s young people that will be coming up with a lot of the solutions my company will need in the future.
I’m excited to see this project come to fruition!
