Have you ever wondered how your competitors are advertising – what websites they advertise on, what audiences they target, what ad copy they use, what kind of landing page they use?
If not, you should. Seeing what’s already working for a business similar to yours is one of the best, if not the best, way to get ideas for your own marketing campaigns.
But how do you find your competitors’ ads? Chris Lakey shares a technique in this video, filmed at a Titanium Mastermind in the Dominican Republic.
WhatRunsWhere is an “ad intelligence” solution, meaning it allows you to see what ads everyone else – including your competitors – is running on the internet. You can see their ad creative and you can see what websites they are running the ads on.
WhatRunsWhere is expensive, starting at $299 per month. You don’t need something like this if you’re starting a new business and making your first few sales. However, if you have an established business and you’re looking to take some market share from your competitors, WhatRunsWhere is for you.
HOW TO USE THIS TECHNIQUE
Here’s the process you would use to “spy” on your competitors with WhatRunsWhere.
First, identify your competitors in the marketplace. You should already know who they are. If you don’t, you’re not ready for this technique.
Let’s say that XYZ is a competitor of yours, selling a similar product in the same marketplace. Search for XYZ inside of WhatRunsWhere. You will be presented with the ads they are running and the metadata about those ads.
The metadata includes what website the ad is published on, and how long it has been running. If the ad has been running for a long time, you can safely assume it’s a profitable ad. If it’s only been running for one day, it may not turn out to be profitable for the advertiser, so be careful.
Assuming you’ve found a profitable ad, you can swipe ideas. Don’t plagiarize, but see what copywriting tactics are at play and use them to get ideas. If you see a website you’ve never advertised on before, but is working for your competitor, give it a try.
