The people on your list are real people. Yes, they’re interested in what you have to say, but there is more to them than that. They have hopes, dreams and desires.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that your customers’ back stories are “none of your business.”
They are your business, because it’s not the details about your product or service, but the details about your customer’s individual situation that makes the sale.

Larry Benet is a master of getting to know people as people. When he speaks to a live audience, he doesn’t just see them as attendees who wanted to hear him speak. He learns about their individual back stories.
He knows that Vivian’s dream is to help one million women. He knows that Ann Marie is a massage therapist who wants to travel the world and go to Hawaii and Brazil.
He knows that Tim’s wife is selling a property in Thailand and that Tim wants to be a stage speaker too. He even found out Tim’s birthday and anniversary, and he’ll reach out when those dates come around.
He knows that Tammy is a technology consultant who was previously in the military. She has a daughter, Grace, who she wants to spend more time with. Her job makes her plenty of money but takes up all of her time.
Do you have this level of detailed knowledge about your own customers?
IF YOU HELP THEM, THEY’LL HELP YOU BACK
Don’t be afraid to be intrusive. Getting to know your customers, and also the colleagues you meet when networking, opens up a lot of opportunities.
Maybe they’ll reveal they need help with something, and it’s something that you are able to help them with. Maybe they can help you in some way. You will only find out when you get to know them.
If your product is not right for them, love them anyway and offer to help however you can. Then, they’ll help you back. Maybe they’ll refer other people your way, or they’ll buy later when their situation changes.
