To Small Business Owners Who Want A Real World Business Education Based On Results (Not Theory)

Dear Small Business Owners,

The choice should be obvious.

However, deciding to get an education raises a whole new set of questions:

  • Who can I trust to teach me?

These are all valid questions.

In fact, I asked myself these same questions before I launched my first business.

Depending on the university, you will:

  • invest 4 years of your time
  • spend $100,000 to $200,000 in tuition and fees
  • spend an additional $25,000 to $50,000 in boarding and books

Here are recent figures for an undergraduate degree (tuition and fees in US dollars):

  • Vassar College, New York, US: $205,200
  • University of Puget Sound, Washington, US: $167,472 (not a top school)
  • Harvard, Massachusetts, US: $181,112
  • University of Oxford, UK: $174,012

On top of that, the full cost of your education is even HIGHER, when you factor in the opportunity cost of leaving the workforce for years.

According to a recent article in Forbes that assumes an average salary of around $40,000, if you go to university for 4 years, you lose $160,000 that you could have earned in the real world.

When you add it all up, the actual cost for a traditional business education is somewhere between $285,000 and $410,000!

And that’s just your undergraduate degree!

If you go on to get a MBA (which people claim you need to succeed), then you will spend another 2 years and up to $250,000 (or more)!

Here are the most recent figures for the cost of a top MBA (tuition and fees):

  • Columbia University, New York City, US: $139,298
  • University of Pennsylvania (Wharton): $147,268
  • Plus … 2 years opportunity cost of not working ($80,000) and boarding and books ($20,000 to $40,000)

That brings your total cost for a traditional business education (including a Bachelor’s Degree and MBA) to somewhere between $500,000 and $675,000!

These are staggering figures, and it’s why so many people have crippling student debt.

And the worst part is … after all of this time and money, all you get is a piece of paper!

This degree is worthwhile if you decide to work at a company (slaving away to make someone else rich). But if you want to run your own business, this piece of paper is worthless

Why?

Because everything you learn at a traditional university is based on THEORY taught by professors who have never run a real business.

These professors are academics who teach out of textbooks, and read papers by other academics on outdated theories that probably never worked in the first place!

They don’t know how to identify a need in the marketplace and create a product that fulfills that need.

They don’t know how to manage people, or setup systems that make a business run more efficiently.

And they certainly haven’t faced the obstacles that all small business owners face.

They have never:

  • been one week away from payroll with no idea how to cover it
  • worked 14 hours a day to get a new business off the ground
  • stared at the ceiling in the middle of the night wondering how to get through the next day

And it’s their lack of “real world” experience that makes everything they teach you worthless.

How I Learned More In 6 Months In The Real World Than In Over 4 Years At University

I spent over 4 years at one of the best business schools in Australia.

I got good grades, but I was frustrated.

I remember sitting in lecture theatres and listening to professors read out of textbooks about how to build a brand and a business.

I remember thinking, “Has this professor ever run a real business?”

I knew something was wrong, but I had been brainwashed my whole life into thinking that university was the only way to get a legitimate education.

So I stuck with it.

I continued going to classes, even though I grew more and more eager each day to get into the world and launch a real business.

Then one day–with just one semester left–I decided I had enough.

I left university and started an e-commerce business.

In the first 6 months of running that business, I learned more than the previous 4 ½ years at university!

Fast forward to today, and I’ve crossed over $115 million in sales by the age of 28.

Every dollar of that $115 million was earned through trial and error in my own businesses, and advice from other business owners.

In the beginning, I got advice from high 6-figure earners. Then (as I became more successful) I sought out millionaires, then multi-millionaires.

Today, my mentors are business leaders who have earned HUNDREDS of millions of dollars.

One of my current mentors built a real estate seminar company to $250 million per year in the early 2000s. He knows more about live events than almost anyone else in the world.

Another is a businessman who lives in a castle in Scotland. He’s operated at a much higher level than me, growing a company to a valuation of $450 million!

I’ve made a point of learning directly from people like this who have DONE it (not read about it).
