If I stood in a seminar room full of MOBE members and asked the audience, “who wants to build a $100 million per year company?”
I can imagine that a lot of hands would immediately shoot up.
But I also know that most of those people don’t have the faintest idea about what goes in to building a company of that size. The reality is that building a big company is not as glamorous as it looks.
In this video, filmed at the Titanium Mastermind in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Curtis Broome talks about 3 truths of building a big company that you usually don’t hear.
1. YOU NEED A TEAM
When you look at a famous $100 million per year company, it’s usually the founder who gets all the credit for building it.
But the truth is, one person can not build a $100 million per year company, or even a $50 million per year company. Teams do that.
Take a look at this chart. These are all the activities that a big company must handle. Everyone likes the idea of building a $100 million business, but no one wants to do all the different things that are necessary to get them there.
Even the thought of hiring different people to handle all of the roles is a daunting one. Where are you going to find all the right people? How are you going to manage such a big team?
The reality is it happens organically. You don’t build a big company in one day, hiring all your roles from day 1. You build it up piece by piece over the years.
2. YOU NEED A PURPOSE AND VISION
When you have a team, purpose and vision are essential.
If you don’t have a purpose that makes it clear why you’re doing what you’re doing, there’s nothing to motivate your team to do the best job. If you don’t have a vision that illustrates what you’re working towards, no one will know what’s going on.
When everyone agrees on the purpose and vision, you have a unified and motivated team, rather than a bunch of different people who only care about their own paychecks.
3. KNOW WHERE YOU ARE AND WHERE YOU’RE GOING
If someone called you on the phone and asked you to meet them where they are, your first question would be, “Where are you?”
If they replied with, “I have no idea,” you’re going to have a hard time meeting up with them.
When your goal is to build a big company, you need to know two things. Where you are right now, and where you want to go.
If you know where you want to go, but you’re not honest and crystal clear about where you are right now, it will forever remain a dream and a wish.
It’s great to have ambitions to build a $100 million per year company, but what if you’re totally broke right now? You need to acknowledge that fact and find a way around it before you have any hope of reaching your goal.
Once you know where you are and where you’re going, you can work out the path to get from one to the other. You can also recognize whenever you get off course and adjust accordingly.
