If you’re using a personal brand for your business, you don’t have the market’s permission to mold it into anything you feel like.
It has to be an authentic reflection of you and your values, because that’s what creates trust.
Jeff Bezos said, “Your brand is what other people say about you when you’re not in the room.” If people know you’re fake and inauthentic and a regurgitation of your competitor, that will become your brand, and you don’t want that.
In this video, filmed at the Super Charge Summit in London, Carolina Millan talks about the importance of authenticity to a personal brand.
DON’T PRETEND TO BE SOMEONE YOU’RE NOT
One of Carolina Millan’s friends, T.J. Rohleder, has been in direct marketing since the 1980s.
Early on in the history of his business, he had the idea to rent a fancy car and drive it to a mansion he did not live in or own, take a photo and use it in a newspaper ad he was placing. His intention was to show off the “lifestyle” his business afforded him.
A mentor quickly deterred him from that idea, advising him not to pretend to be someone he’s not.
Too many marketers think they need to mold their company or personal brand into what they think the market wants, but what the market really wants is authenticity. When they can see you are who you say you are, people will trust and like you more.
DO “TURN UP THE VOLUME”
Ideally, your personal brand should be an extension of who you are. Instead of trying to be someone else, take the key characteristics of your everyday personality and “turn up the volume.”
This way, you can add strength to your brand without losing its authenticity.
If you’ve been trying to mold your personal brand into something that does not truly represent who you are, it’s probably because you were trying to avoid criticism and rejection. However, the truth always comes out in the end, and it won’t last.
Instead, take some time to ponder who you are and what values do you stand for. The answer may not come to you immediately. It will come when you allow the space for it, and that may not be for months.
When you do get that answer, you will uncover the foundation of a personal brand that’s an authentic reflection of you.
