Many people don’t set high goals because of fear.
They don’t set high goals because they have no idea how they are going to get there. They assume it can’t be done, or they worry that they won’t be able to figure it out in time.
But you should have faith in your ability to figure things out as you go along. The most successful people set high goals first, and work out how they’re going to get there second.
In this video, filmed at the Titanium Mastermind in the Dominican Republic, T.J. Rohleder and Chris Lakey tell the story of how setting high goals doubled the size of their business.
A MILLION DOLLARS A MONTH
T.J. Rohleder and his wife Eileen were operating a business that was turning over 5 to 6 million a year. T.J. handled the marketing and came up with a lot of creative ideas, but Eileen was the president and CEO. She took a more conservative stance and vetoed a lot T.J.’s aggressive ideas.
When Eileen had to step down for health reasons, T.J. took over her role as president and CEO. Chris Lakey became the marketing manager.
T.J. and Chris decided they wanted to do a million dollars a month. It was twice as much as they’d ever made before, and they didn’t even know how they were going to do it.
But they set the goal anyway, committed to it, and they came up with creative ideas as they went along. Within a couple of years, the business was doing 2 million a month.
TIPS FOR GOAL SETTING
You can set an easy goal that you know you can do, but it’s not going to stretch you. You can set an unrealistic goal, but you’re not going to bother if you don’t truly believe you can do it.
Set your goals in the middle ground between those two extremes. It has to be realistic, but also big enough that it stretches you out of your comfort zone.
Then, write down your goal and hold yourself accountable to it. Even better, tell people about it. Don’t be afraid to put it out there in public, because the fear of humiliation will only motivate you even more.
