Nine Months of Struggle
MOBE is doing very well these days—but I’ll never forget that nine-month scrape when I didn’t know what I was doing, didn’t know that I didn’t know what I was doing, and began to worry that perhaps I’d made the worst (and most expensive) mistake of my young life.
That’s the last thing I ever want a MOBE consultant to experience.
Late in 2008, I bought into an affiliate marketing program for $2,000. I’d researched it and had heard of people who were earning $50,000 a month with it. I was excited at the idea that maybe I could, too.
For the first few months I read emails and other materials from the company I’d signed up with, as well as from other companies whose mailing lists I’d opted into. For several hours a day, I watched videos, attended webinars and read
e-books about various aspects of online marketing.
I felt busy but my actions weren’t producing results (i.e. sales).
I went to a live event that this company put on and ended up investing the majority of my life savings—$38,000—in their top-tier program.
I spent months doing the things I thought I should be doing, such as learning about coding, SEO, how to build a website and set up an autoresponder.
Months passed and still no sales.
Eventually, I decided to place some paid ads, which brought in some leads. I started to build a list and email them but was still not making any sales.
I began to lose hope. “I’ve dropped out of college and plunked down all my money … for nothing,” I thought. “Maybe my friends and family are right: it’s just a pie-in-the-sky dream.”
Finally, after nine months of utter struggle, I got my first sale, with a $1,000 commission. I felt some hope. Several more weeks went by before I got the next one. Then they began coming closer and closer together—and they got bigger, too.
Six Simple Words
One benefit that MOBE consultants have is that, unlike that early affiliate program I was in, you don’t have to construct websites or learn how to sell to people over the phone. With MOBE, all of that is taken care of for you.
You only have to concentrate on one thing, summed up in six simple words:
Drive Paid Traffic to the Offer.
It’s such a briefly stated idea that people tend to overlook it, but at the start it’s the only thing that is going to bring you results.
In the beginning, I couldn’t drive traffic to the offer because the infrastructure wasn’t in place for it. I had to create my own. But I have to admit that I also wasted a lot of time learning things I would never need or use.
You will feel very busy, but will in actuality be utterly unproductive if you read your e-mail and click on every offer you receive from the online marketing gurus you’ve signed up with; sign up for and attend their webinars; download and read all of their reports; watch how-to videos on YouTube; goof around on Facebook; and spend hours reading about web design, coding, copywriting, SEO—whatever.
So don’t do that. Only do the actions that produce cash. And those actions are the ones that help you drive paid traffic to the offer:
- Choose a traffic method.
- Study how to do it for an hour.
- Apply what you learned for five hours.
- Drive paid traffic to the offer.
As I stated at the beginning, you will struggle at first, but you will cut down the length of your struggle if you do the actions that produce cash, as summed up in those six simple words.
